James Smith produced one of the best innings of the season to guide Pudsey St Lawrence to an emphatic six-wicket win in the Pudsey derby at the Britannia Ground.
Smith made an unbeaten 132 from 120 balls with three sixes and 19 fours as St Lawrence recovered from 31-3 to overhaul a Pudsey Congs score of 215-5.
It was Smith's second successive century - he made 124 against Farsley last week - and it was an innings of the highest quality.
The power of his strokeplay was breathtaking, but he would be the first to acknowledge the contribution of 15-year-old Kasir Maroof who played with great maturity for his 47 in a fourth-wicket stand of 154 with Smith.
Nathan Bromby (3-69) was the most successful bowler for Congs, but with Tom Glover and Elliott Wilson not bowling because of niggling injuries, the home side's attack was made to look extremely tame as St Lawrence won with 8.2 overs to spare.
Congs would have been disappointed to have only made 215-5 in conditions which favoured batting, a hard track and a fast outfield. Scott Cunningham top scored with 54 and Andrew Bourke looked good in making 49, but Congs were never able to dominate. Skipper Babar Butt (38no) tried to raise the tempo but Andrew Doidge (2-41) and some extremely defensive field placings ensured St Lawrence kept control of the game.
Champions Woodlands took another step towards a third successive title when they defeated Brighouse by 53 runs. Scott Richardson (82), Tosh Baker (47) and Tim Orrell (42) were the top scorers as Woodlands made 243-7.
Brighouse, who are now precariously placed just 11 points above the relegation positions, replied with 190-7. Skipper Mark Gilliver top scored with 59. Chris Brice was again the best Woodlands bowler with three for 65.
Woodlands collected 18 points and remain 50 clear of East Bierley who were made to fight hard for their 29-run win over Cleckheaton. Former Cleckheaton player Kez Ahmed (4-52) and left-arm spinner Luke Jarvis (4-23) helped dismiss Cleckheaton for 151 after opener Michael Nicholson (53) had given his side a good start.
East Bierley were indebted to Andrew Rennison (67) for guiding them to a total of 180-8. Leg spinner Tom Pringle was a constant threat and took five for 55.
The spectre of relegation is looming large for Idle following their 81-run defeat by fellow strugglers farsley. Idle are 14 points adrift at the bottom and 25 away from safety following their 13th defeat of the season.
In contrast, Farsley have improved their chances of avoiding the drop by picking up a 20-point maximum. Such results against fellow relegation strugglers are like gold dust so they will be understandably delighted by the outcome.
Farsley posted an impressive 256-8, despite being 38-4 at one point. Overseas all-rounder Kallum Fernando (94) and skipper Ashley metcalfe (58) shared a fifth-wicket stand of 150. Michael Allen was the pick of the Idle bowlers with four for 44.
Idle, as has been the case so often in recent weeks, made a disastrous start. They lost their first two wickets with just two on the board and from then on were always struggling. Allen top scored with 33 but Idle were dismissed for 175 as Jan Gadzina returned the impressive figures of five for 64.
Bradford & Bingley eased their relegation fears with a comfortable six-wicket win over Saltaire. Adal islam (43) and Fawad Maqsood were the top scorers in a disappointing Saltaire total of 142. Their cause wasn't helped by four run outs.
David Clow (44no) and Chris Thompson (30no) shared an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 51 as Bradford & Bingley collected a welcome 16 points.
Hanging Heaton's three-match winning sequence came to an abrupt end when they suffered a 17-run defeat at Baildon. Hanging heaton would have been hoping for a happier outcome when they dismissed baildon for 120 with Chris Schofield taking four for 26. Tabi Bhatti (41) was the one batsman to resist for long.
Hanging Heaton made a disastrous start and were soon two for three. Their positioned worsened further as they slumped to 58-8 and despite the efforts of tail-enders Nick Summerscales (19), Farhan Khan (16) and Shafiq Akhtar (15) they were dismissed for 103. Spinners Jeremy Batty (4-37) and Mushtaq Ahmed (3-39) were the main wicket takers.
Bowling Old Lane remain trapped in the relegation positions after a six-wicket reverse against Manningham Mills who were promoted to the top flight with them this season. Old Lane produced one of their best batting displays of the season to reach 240 all out, but Mills passed their total with six overs to spare.
Overseas Shoaib Khan (69), Tahir Khan (39) and Naeem Ashraf (33) were the top scorers for Old Lane while Gamaal Hussain continued his good form for Mills by taking five for 57.

The top-of Division Two encounter between Morley and Yeadon proved to be a one-sided encounter. Leaders Yeadon extended their lead to 20 points after dismissing Morley for a dismal 67 and knocking off the runs without loss. Aamer Sajjad (3-13), Steve Cobley (3-17) and Andrew Robertson (3-27) were the destroyers. Yeadon cruised to victory with Robertson making 44 not out.
Keighley have move above Gomersal into third place after defeating them by three wickets with two balls to spare. Matthew Bottomley (48), Steve Reape (42no) and Max Davison (39) were the main contributors as Keighley overhauled a Gomersal total of 244-7.
The Gomersal total was built around the contributions of Amer Siddique (51), Richard Gould (43), Adam Stott (35) and Matthew Garside (32no) Andrew Coppen was Keighley's best bowler with three for 58.
The defeat crowns a miserable run for Gomersal. They have lost three successive games and also suffered a two-point deduction for breaching the over-rate regulations in their match at Spen Victoria.
Esholt kept alive their outside chance of promotion by earning 20 points for a 39-run win over Bankfoot. They looked in trouble at 28-4 but recovered to make 233-7 thanks to the efforts of skipper Richard Whitehurst (94) and Ben Platt (64). Bankfoot, despite a splendid century from Micky Hutchins which contained two sixes and eight fours, were dismissed for 194 with Robin Hill taking five for 45.
Spen Victoria's Chris Elstub produced the best bowling figures of the season, but still ended up on the losing side. He took nine for 36 as Spen suffered a nail-biting one-wicket defeat at Great Horton. Elstub had also top scored with 28 in the disappointing Spen score of 118. Kashif Naveed again impressed for Great Horton with five for 23. Great Horton's top scorer was Sudaya Zaman with 41.
Spen's defeat enabled Windhill to climb out of the re-election positions following their five-wicket triumph over Hartshead Moor in the basement battle. Overseas star Aftab Khan stroked an unbeaten 125 from 101 balls with a six and 19 fours. Tahir Amin (76no) joined him in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 163.
Two Hartshead Moor batsman agnonisingly missed out on centuries. Danny Squire made 99 while Nicky Ward was 98 not out when the 50 overs expired. Their efforts enabled Hartshead Moor to post a total of 260-3 - a score Windhill passed with 8.3 overs to spare.
The Lightcliffe rise continues and so does the Undercliffe slump. Skipper Richard Nichols took five for 43 as battling Lightcliffe recovered from a dismal start to record a 22-run win. A Lightcliffe win looked a remote prospect when they slumped to 46-5, but James Horne (55), Aleem Ladak (42no) and James Flower (39) sparked a revival that carried their side to a respectable 192-8. Imran Amin (4-63) was the best Undercliffe bowler.
Undercliffe looked to be heading for a much-needed win until they collapsed from 147-3 to 170 all out. Darren Blenkiron was again the top scorer with 43 while Farakh Hussain made 39. |
