Hanging Heaton left their title rivals feeling under the weather as they secured a six-wicket win over Farsley to go to the top of the JCT 600 Seconds Teams Division One table with just two matches to go.
Their fixture at Bennett Lane was one of only two to be completed - the other saw fourth-placed Yeadon defeat Saltaire by eight wickets - and Hanging Heaton will now be hoping for a second title in three seasons.
The Byrnes, Peter (3-28) and James (3-26) were simply too hot for Farsley to handle as they helped bowl out the relegation strugglers for 148. Steven Cockshott top scored with 42.
Hanging Heaton took just 24.2 overs to secure their valuable victory. Opener Howard Ellis hit ten fopurs in his 56 which set the tempo for the successful run chase.
The victory put them seven points in front of East Bierley who were one of the sides left cursing the wet weather.
They made an impressive 192-1 in a match reduced to 25 overs a side. Opener Arron Brook was in tremendous form as he raced to 102 with the aid of six sixes and 12 fours. His 15-year-old opening partner Scott Douglas made an unbeaten 53 and the two of them shared a partnership of 166.
Bottom team Gomersal were struggling at 64-4 after 14 overs when the match was abandoned. There were two wickets each for pacemen Chris Brook (2-21) and Dan Abbott (2-33).
Third-placed Lightcliffe, whose title hopes have faded in recent weeks, were involved in a thrilling game with Pudsey St lawrence which was deprived of a fitting conclusion by the rain.
St Lawrence made 177-7 in 39 overs with Cameron Roy striking 75 and Craig Trapps (35). The most successful Lightcliffe bowler was Alex Tait (3-64).
Lightcliffe made a bold effort to try and force victory. Opener Bruce Lunn led the chase with a fine 73. The home side had reached 166-7, still needing 12 to win when play ended. Anthony Yelding (3-47) and young spinner Adam Hopkins (3-40) bowled well.
Lightcliffe are 14 points adrift of new leaders Hanging heaton but are three ahead of Yeadon who defeated Saltaire by eight wickets thanks to the combined efforts of Nick Darfield and Paul Machell.
Darfield took five for 36 and was well supported by Jon Carey (4-30) as Saltaire were dismissed for 151. Yeadon were guided to their victory target by opener Machell who finished unbeaten on 87.
Defending champions Woodlands gave their hopes of avoiding relegation a lift by collecting ten points from their abandoned game at Pudsey Congs.
Fifteen-year-old Tom Smallwood (76) and skipper Phil Walker (75) shared a third-wicket stand of 105 as Woodlands built a score of 231-7 in 44 overs. Ben Burkill was the best Congs bowler with four for 53.
Congs had reached 152-6 in reply when the match was halted. Skipper Michael Oldfield was unbeaten on 34 at the time while Walker followed up his batting performance by taking three for 33.
Lowly Bowling Old Lane picked up seven useful points from their clash with keighley. They secured maximum bowling points by bowling out Keighley for 118 with skipper Haqueq Siddique taking four for 23 and Ammer Rahim (3-14). Old Lane were 28-0 when play was washed out.
Baildon, another side fighting to avoid the drop, made 206-6 against Esholt with Mohammad Abbas making 57 and Darren Wilson (41). Esholt were 61-2 when the match was halted. |
