The JCT 600 Bradford League Second Teams Division One title race took a new twist with East bierley defeating leaders Hanging Heaton to take over at the top.
With one game to go East Bierley have a three-point lead over Lightcliffe - who defeated Esholt by 38 runs - and are six ahead of Hanging Heaton.
The title race is now between the three teams and on the final day of the season there is sue to be a lot of nail-biting as East Bierley visit Farsley, Hanging Heaton host bottom team Gomersal and Lightcliffe go to Woodlands.
East Bierley, who are chasing a league and Sovereign Health Care Priestley Shield double, bowled out Hanging Heaton for 111 with opening bowler Chris Brook taking five for 45. East Bierley eased home by five wickets with John Davis making 37.
Lightcliffe moved back into contention with their victory over Esholt. Lightcliffe made 267-7 with opener Bruce Lunn (81), Gareth Stevens (48), Rob Crookes (46) and Steve Hartley (45) all making valuable contributions.
Esholt were restricted to 229-9 in reply despite a fine knock of 90 from opener Jason Wilkinson. Sam Godden (3-37) was the best lightcliffe bowler as they picked up 19 points for their success.
Yeadon's title challenge was finally ended when they suffered a four-wicket defeat at Baildon. A total of 146 all out was disappointing with John Carey (61) the one player to look at ease as Matthew Reed took five for 25.
Baildon lost three early wickets before Mohammad Nawaz (55) steadied the innings and steered his side towards a welcome win.
Woodlands warmed up for the Sovereign Health care Priestley Shield final with a 129-run win over Gomersal. Skipper Phil Walker (58), Cieran Garner (47), Keith Robson (43) and Richard Godfrey (41) led them to a score of 240-8. Joel Metcalfe (5-59) and Walker (4-19) then bowled out Gomersal for 111.
Bowling old Lane are in real danger of an immediate return to Division two after their six-wicket reverse against Farsley. Steve Cockshott made 61 as Farsley eased to victory after bowling out Old lane for 151. Gaz Rehman (33) and Haqueq Siddique (32) were Old lane's best batsmen as Adam Walker took four for 40 and Liam Thewlis (3-21).
Old Lane are seven points ahead of bottom team Gomersal, but are just one behind Saltaire and five adrift of Keighley who both lost.
Saltaire went down by five wickets against Pudsey St Lawrence. Jack Holland (45) and Awais Ijaz (44) helped Saltaire to a score of 182 as teenage bowlers Adam Hopkins (4-34) and Chris Sharkey (3-51) caught the eye. St Lawrence had little trouble reaching their target once James Milligan (66) and Niall Coleman (41) got into their stride.
Richard Jubb (63no) and James Lindley-Dawe (57) steered Pudsey Congs to a five-wicket win over relegation-threatened Keighley. Andrew Waggett (63), Alan Birkett (40) and Paul Wilkinson (39) were the main scorers as Keighley made 189. They paid dearly for losing their last seven wickets 35 runs.
There was a thrilling climax to the Division Two promotion race with Spen Victoria leaping from fourth to second to clinch second place behind champions Cleckheaton.
Spen took 20 points from their game with Brighouse. They declared after reaching 229-5, thanks to 53 not out from Richard Marsden and 48 from Leigh Manton, before dismissing Brighouse for 71. Robert Warriner took four for 17 and John Ireland (4-21).
With Bradford & Bingley only able to take 15 points after dismissing Great Horton for 60 on their way to a six-wicket win, Waj Ali took three for 10 and Adam Swallow (3-24), Spen went a point of their rivals.
But their promotion was not confirmed until the completion of the battle between champions Cleckheaton and Manningham Mills. Many of the Spen players had hurried to the ground once their match was over to watch the dramatic finally.
After making 218 and collecting four batting bonus points Mills needed to take eight wickets to finish level on points with Spen and had to bowl out Cleckheaton and win the game to pip them.
In a tense finally Cleckheaton reached their target losing seven wickets thus confirming promotion for their jubilant neighbours. Marcus Walmsley (51) and Matthew West $2no) were the men who steered Cleckheaton to their win. For Mills Syed Ahmed hit a rapid 72.
Windhill provided some final day fireworks as they blast a season's best score of 406-5 as they beat Bankfoot by 249 runs. Opener Phil Drake made a blistering 142 and his efforts were capitalised on by Ryan Holdsworth who made 111 not out. The nine men of Bankfoot were dismissed for 157 despite a defiant 62 from Faisal Rajput.
Neil McClelland had a fine all-round game as Idle rounded off their season with a 119-run win over Morley. He made 81 out of Idle's 207 and took five for 44 as Morley were dismissed for 88.
Hartshead Moor continued their good end of season form with a 67-run win over Undercliffe. Neil Dickinson (89) and Mark Baldwin (47) helped them post a score of 188 before bowling out Undercliffe for 121. Jeff Wind helped blow away the Undercliffe batting with four for 31. |
