Newly-promoted Esholt produced the biggest shock of new season when they defeated Pudsey Congs by seven wickets to record their first ever JCT 600 Bradford League Division One win.

The result crowned a remarkable change of fortunes for Esholt. On the opening day of the season they were dismissed for just 55 as they suffered a crushing 141-run defeat at Hanging Heaton.

But they responded in the best possible way as they inflicted a second successive home defeat on a Pudsey Congs side which has been tipped to be title contenders this season.

Esholt played with great determination and discipline. Their bowlers made the most of a damp pitch to restrict Pudsey Congs to a score of 155-8. It was a bigger total than seemed likely when Congs slipped to 81-6. Babar Butt (49) and Andrew Bairstow (34) were the main contributors while left arm spinner Ben Platt (3-43) was the pick of the Esholt bowlers.

The Cummins brothers gave Esholt a solid start to their reply with a stand of 49. Former Idle player Paul made 40 and his younger brother Mark (23). Their good work was built on by overseas player Shahzaib Khan (37) and Gulsheraz Ahmed (30) as Esholt eased home with nine balls to spare.

Baildon are the early leaders after defeating Pudsey St Lawrence by 73 runs to secure their second 18 point success of the season.

Once again their new signing Ahsan Butt had a fine match. He compiled a superb innings of 78 which contained four sixes and five fours as he helped his side to a total of 178 despite the efforts of Gareth Clough (3-44) and Chris Marsden (3-42).

St Lawrence, who were without their opening batsman Mark Robertshaw, struggled in reply and were dismissed for 105 as they plunged to their second defeat. Left arm spinner Mushtaq Ahmed took four for 37.

Like Baildon, Bradford & Bingley, East Bierley and champions Woodlands also notched up their second victories.

The evergreen Richard McCarthy followed up his eight for 12 against Bowling Old Lane last week by taking four for 23 as Bradford & Bingley skittled newly-promoted Yeadon for just 49. Will Briggs (4-14) was the other main destroyer. Bradford & Bingley lost five wickets in securing their win which takes them into second place three points adrift of Baildon.

New signing Chris Elstub continued his good start for East Bierley by taking four for 24 as his side defeated Hanging Heaton by 22 runs. East Bierley also owed a big debt to young batsman Andrew Rennison who made an unbeaten 27 to help them to a total of 128 in bowler-friendly conditions. Nick Summerscales bowled superbly to take five for 28 for Hanging Heaton.

The East Bierley score was boosted by 26 extras but that figure was dwarfed by the 36 they conceded as they dismissed Hanging Heaton for 106. Amar Rashid (28) was the next highest contributor for Hanging Heaton. Left arm spinner Luke Jarvis was remarkably economical taking two for eight in 12 overs.

Champions Woodlands made light work of their match at Manningham Mills. They bowled out the home side for 90 with Richard Spittlehouse taking five for 23 and teenage spinner Harry Smallwood (3-23). Woodlands cruised to victory by seven wickets in 19.4 overs with opener Scott Richardson hitting 37.

Saltaire produced a good all-round performance to record their first win. They beat Cleckheaton by four wickets with one of their young batsmen Awais Ijaz catching the eye with a fine knock of 50.

Opening bowler Tuseif Arshad also played a key part in the Saltaire success. He took four for 54 as Cleckheaton were dismissed for 160. Ian Nicholson battled his way to a patient 53, while Craig Thornton made 32, but Cleckheaton were dismissed in 44 overs and paid the penalty.

Bowling Old Lane handed out a 113-run beating to Brighouse. Overseas player Riaz Kail and Mansha Khan produced fine all-round displays. Kail top scored with 81 and Khan hit 51 as Old Lane piled up 218-5.

Brighouse were never in the hunt in reply and were dismissed for 105 as Khan claimed three for 13, left arm spinner Mohammad Hanif (3-15) and Kail (2-15).

Gomersal are the early leaders of Division Two after a comfortable six wicket win at Keighley. Overseas player Kashif Naveed continued his good start to the season by making an unbeaten 78 with four sixes and nine fours as Gomersal cruised past the Keighley score of 154-8. Last season's Division two top scorer Richard Gould made 40.

Keighley had found the going tough against the tight Gomersal bowling and only skipper Steve Reape (40) and Andrew Waggett (37) made any impression.

Gomersal are two points ahead of Farsley who had a nail-biting one-wicket win over Great Horton. Such a close finish seemed unlikely when Great Horton were dismissed for 134 - a score boosed considerably by Sulaman Khan's fine innings of 74. He was the only player to master the bowling of Chris Henry (3-30) and Robert Thornton (3-25).

Farsley lost early wickets in their reply but were revived by former Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire player Ashley Metcalfe who made 40. Moin Ashraf (3-28) and Ziafat Ashraf (3-29) bowled well for Great Horton.

Idle are a further point adrift after snatching a three-wicket win over Bankfoot. Wicketkeeper John Barton (45no) and Mohammad Rasool (21no) shared an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 50 to guide their side past the Bankfoot score of 149 - a total that was considerably boosted by a 31-ball half-century from Nigel Hanson.

Morley's new overseas fast bowler Mohammad Azhar Ullah was quick to make his mark. The former Pudsey Congs player took five for 43 as Morley dismissed Spen Victoria for 70 to wrap up a 75 run win. Adam Larkin was the only batsman on show to master the conditions as he made a superb 81 not out for Morley to dominate their innings of 145-5.

Young spinner James Pringle took five for 19 to guide Windhill to a 106 run win over Hartshead Moor. Graham Hilton (34) and Simon North (29) were the top scorers for Hartshead Moor whoo look to be facing another tough season.

Windhill set up their win by scoring 209-6 after batting first. Tahir Amin (44) and overseas player Ammar Mahmood (41) were their main scorers while North (4-50) was the best of the Hartshead Moor bowlers.

Lightcliffe skipper Richard Nichols claimed his second six wicket haul of the new campaign to send Undercliffe sliding to their second defeat. Lightcliffe, who made 155 with Nick Pyrah scoring 38, bowled out Undercliffe for 117.
