First team review
Mills win thriller to send title race to the final game
Posted: September 6,2009

Division One

The title race will go to the last game of the season following bottom-team Manningham Mills' dramatic one-wicket win over leaders Baildon.

Last man Zaffer Gaffer scrambled a single from the final ball as Mills followed up their crushing win over East Bierley on Saturday with another victory.

It leaves Baildon 15 points ahead of Bradford & Bingley who are the only team who can pip them to the title. They beat Pudsey Congs by 20 runs.

East Bierley's hopes were shattered when Farsley avenged last week's Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup final defeat. They triumphed by seven wickets to guarantee their place in Division One for another season.

Cleckheaton also killed off any threat of relegation with a five-wicket win at Gomersal, but Saltaire remain in danger after a 21-run defeat at Pudsey Congs.

They are 12 points ahead of Hanging Heaton who suffered a five-wicket defeat against Woodlands.

The most dramatic match was at Manningham Mills where the home side deprived a nervy Baildon side of the chance to wrap up the title.

Tight bowling by Nasser Jamal (4-38) and Adil Islam (3-30) kept Baildon in check and a total of 153-9 was disappointing.

Mills looked in trouble when they were 99-7, but Khurram Maqsood was untroubled by the situation. He struck a fine 50 and set up his side's dramatic win. Once again Andy Walker (4-52) and Mushtaq Ahmed (3-21) were the pick of the bowlers for Baildon who now need six points from their final match against East Bierley at Jenny Lane on Saturday to win their first championship for 57 years.

Bradford & Bingley, whose final match is at home to Gomersal, kept their title challenge alive with a 20-run win over Pudsey Congs. Matthew Duce (38) and Simon Davies (32) helped their side to make 148-8. Congs, despite 51 from Essex player James Middlebrook, were bowled out for 128 as Will Briggs took four for 36 and spinner Matthew Cockshott (3-36).

East Bierley's title dream came to an end when they suffered a seven-wicket defeat against Farsley. Careless batting saw them dismissed for 203 in 46.1 overs and that meant they gave their rivals three extra overs - something that was to prove decisive.

An unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 116 between Shabbir Rashid (62no) and West Indian Lorenzo Inghram (54no) saw Farsley win with ten balls to spare. Greg Wood (57) top scored for East Bierley who faltered against the bowling of Joe Greaves (4-52) and Robert Thornton (3-29).

Hanging Heaton's hopes of avoiding relegation suffered another blow when they went down by five wickets to Woodlands.Amar Rashid - brother of Yorkshire and England's Adil - battles hard for his side. He made an unbeaten 44 as Hanging Heaton were dismissed for 158 and took four for 38 as Woodland's suffered a mid-innings wobble before securing their win.

Left-arm spinner Chris Brice took five for 31 for Woodlands, while Scott Richardson (38) and Nicky Rushworth (33no) helped their side to their victory target.

Saltaire remain at risk of relegation after their defeat at Tofts Road. Iain Priestley (67no) and Steve Thompson (49no) shared an unbroken ninth wicket stand which took St Lawrence from 96-8 to 206-8.

Saltaire were dismissed for 185 in reply with Yassir Abbas making 42, George Hicks (39) and Saj Ali (30). Alex Stead (4-39) and Chris Marsden (3-54) were the pick of the St Lawrence bowlers.

Cleckheaton guaranteed their place in Division One with a five-wicket win over Gomersal. The home side were dismissed for 117 as Ian Wood took four for 37 and Mark Cummins 3-3) and Cleckheaton knocked off the runs with Mark Cummins making 37no and John Wood (30).
