Second team review

St Lawrence end East Bierley's record but Yeadon go top

Posted: May 3, 2009

Action from Lightcliffe v Spen Victoria

Division 1

East Bierley's long unbeaten run has been ended. Having gone through last season without a loss, they tasted defeat in only their second game of the new campaign as they were comprehensively beaten by Pudsey St Lawrence at Tofts Road.

St Lawrence, who had taken maximum points from their first two games, underlined their pedigree as genuine title contenders as they cruised to an eight-wicket success.

East Bierley were always on the back foot and were bowled out for just 135 and that score would have been even smaller if it hadn't been for a gutsy knock of 45 from bowler Chris Brook. Richard Marsden was the best St Lawrence bowler with three for 51.

Phil Wilson (57no) and David Hester (54no) guided St Lawrence home to a win which earned them 16 points.

Perhaps there would even have been some disappointment that despite the win they were knocked off the top spot by Yeadon who gained 19 points for defeating Keighley by 107 runs. Consistent batting from Paul Machell (50), Jake Wray (39), Andrew Pickering (38), Graham Simpson (37) and Kieran Hanogue (32) enabled Yeadon to make 209-6 before bowling out Keighley for 102. Paul Machell completed a fine all-round performance by taking four for 30.

Morley are proving to be a surprise package. Last season's Division Two champions made it three wins out of three as they beat Baildon by eight wickets. Hard-hitting Matthew Green blasted 84 and young James McNicholl made 32 as Morley cruised past Baildon's disappointing score of 125 all out.

Woodlands opener Cieran Garner maintained his good form by making 84 as his side beat Cleckheaton by nine runs. He was the one batsman to make his mark as Adam Fearnley picked up six for 28 to restrict Woodlands to a score of 167-9. Cleckheaton, who have now lost all three matches, battled hard with Chris Dyer (44) and Chris Dobson (34) leading the way, but they finished on 158-9. Greig Godfrey was Woodlands' best bowler with five for 49 while skipper Phil Walker took three for 25.

Undercliffe recorded their first win as they defeated Hanging Heaton by 62 runs. Veteran Andy Wilsdon made 98 and Gareth Duckworth (51) as Undercliffe made an impressive 255-7 before restricting Hanging Heaton to 193-9. Chris Goodaire (56) and Andrew Nettleton (51) top scored for Hanging Heaton.

Bowling Old Lane are fifth in the table after a comfortable 94-run win over Farsley. They made 193 all out thanks to the contributions of Rifaqet Ali (40), Ehsa Ghani (39) and Saeed Afsar 32. Farsley were soon in trouble in their reply and only a determined 43 from Ryan Lumb enabled them to crawl to 99-8.

Division Two

The relegated duo of Spen Victoria and Lightcliffe are setting the pace as they bid for an immediate return to Division One.

A trio of young batsmen hit half-centuries as Spen overhauled a Bradford & Bingley score of 212-8 to win by six-wickets. Adam Brown led the way with a blistering 55 from 34 balls and his efforts were capitalised on by Sean Raven (57no) and Amar Hussain (53no). Earlier, teenage opening bowler Robert Warriner had taken five for 51 during a Bradford & Bingley innings which was revived by Michael Clarke (43), Adam Swallow (38) and Jonathan Armstrong (34) after the first three wickets had fallen cheaply.

Spen lead the table by four points from Lightcliffe who had a nervy two-wicket win at Hartshead Moor. Old warhorse Roger Stead took six for 26 as Hartshead Moor were dismissed for 106, but Lightcliffe were given a fright as Jeff Wind took four for 23 and they stumbled over the winning line.

Another golden-oldie in good form with the ball was Windhill's Dave Pearce. He took five for 11 as his side defeated Manningham Mills by one-wicket. Suck a close finish seemed unlikely when Mills were bowled out for 99, but they hit back strongly through Jamal Mahboob (6-19) and Hamza Khan (3-30) and Windhill just managed to snatch the win.

There was also a tight finish at Idle where the home side went down to a two-wicket defeat against Great Horton. Andy Paratt top scored with 32 in Idle's score of 140-9, but then Mohammad Ramzan (37), Majid Khan (32) and Mohammad Daud (30) steered Great Horton home.

Skipper Chris Rhodes hit 75 and took four for 28 as Gomersal defeated Brighouse by 50 runs. Rhodes and Andy Minnott (34) enabled Gomersal to make 213 all out despite the efforts of Chris Maloney (6-49). Maloney, not to be outdone by Rhodes, hit 67 but Brighouse were dismissed of 163.

Usman Arshad made 63 and with support from Joe Hicks (46) and Amarpaul Sarai (36) helped Saltaire to make 223-7 as they defeated Bankfoot by 37 runs. For Bankfoot, Nicos Haralabidis made 46, while Miles Robinson followed up his three for 56 with the ball by hitting 39. Mick Robinson was Saltaire's match-winner with six for 39.
