Final 2009
Hanging Heaton v Pudsey St Lawrence

Hanging Heaton have won the Sovereign Health Care Priestley Shield for the first time since 2003 after defeating Pudsey St Lawrence by three wickets at Spen Victoria.

Nabeel Hafeez was voted man of the match after making top score of 70 as Hanging Heaton cruised past Pudsey St Lawrence's score of 178 all out with 5.2 overs to spare.

Hafeez arrived at the crease after a brisk opening stand of 58 between Howard Ellis (26) and Michael Royce (26) and took charge with an array of attacking strokes.

Unafraid of taking the aerial route, he hit two sixes and ten fours in an innings which spanned 82 balls.

Left-arm spinner Adam Hopkins took four for 50 to keep St Lawrence in the hunt, and when Luke Duckitt removed dangerman Hafeez and his brother Adeel in the same over, Hanging Heaton's nerves were jangling.

At 164-7 there was still a chance that Hanging Heaton would falter, but skipper Andrew Nettleton and Mick Horner steered their side home without further loss. Horner eventually securing victory by pulling a short ball from Luke Duckitt for six.

Richard Marsden (1-27) and Chris Sharkey (0-28) both bowled their ten overs economically, but their colleagues were guilty of conceeding far too many boundaries.

When St Lawrence reflect on the game they will no doubt pinpoint the number of boundaries they offered up and the inability of any of their batsmen to post a big score as being decisive.

St Lawrence are normally a free scoring side but they were kept in check by disciplined bowling. Spinner Umar Rehman (4-36) and Adeel Hafeez (3-31) were the main wicket takers, but they were well supported by all the other bowlers employed.

Big-hitting Richard Marsden, who struck two big sixes in an unbeaten 32 and Lee Mortimer (32) were the top scorers for a St Lawrence side that failed to recapture the free-scoring form they have shown in the league this season.

The action as it happened.

Royce drives Marsden through the covers as Hanging heaton reach 28-0 after four overs.
