Division One

Former Lancashire and Durham paceman John Wood put the skids under league leaders Pudsey St Lawrence as his Cleckheaton side eased to a five-wicket win at Tofts Road.

Wood produced a spell of six for 57 as Cleckheaton inflicted a first defeat of the season on St Lawrence.

There is something about facing St Lawrence that brings out the best in Wood - most notably when he took seven for 22 against them to bowl Spen Victoria to victory in the 1990 Priestley Cup final.

He clearly enjoyed the fact that the wicket had a little nip in it and he exploited it to the full in tandem with fellow opening bowler Ian Wardlaw (4-51).

After seeing their powerful top four blown away for just 43 runs, St Lawrence were relieved to see young left-hander David Hester stroke his way to an elegant 57 in a fifth-wicket stand of 104 with Chris Marsden (54).

Hester's innings included two sixes and eight fours, while Marsden struck eight fours. When both were dismissed in quick succession the innings went into decline and St Lawrence were all out for 191.

Cleckheaton were carried towards their victory target by a third-wicket stand of 95 between opener Mark Cummins (77) and Ian Nicholson (40). Cummins hits 12 boundaries and had little trouble keeping a disappointing St Lawrence attack at bay.

St Lawrence's defeat means their lead has been cut from 22 to just eight points, while Cleckheaton have now climbed to fifth place.

Second-placed Woodlands became the latest side to take advantage of the fine batting conditions at Gomersal as they took maximum points from a 91-run win.

The match marked the return to form of Dan Shuffe. After three successive ducks the former Yeadon player who topped the Division One batting averages last season, made a superb 124 as Woodlands piled up an impressive 302-8. Shuffe struck a six and 24 fours while Nicky Rushworth (43), Adam Goldthorpe (38) and Sarfraz Ahmed (30no) chipped in with valuable runs.

All of the Gomersal bowlers were made to suffer as their figures show. Ben Platt (3-98) and Shahzaib Khan (3-90) were the most successful but also came in for heavy punishment.

Gomersal were content to hunt for batting points when they replied and finished on 211-8. Seventeen-year-old opener Andy Gorrod again showed the way with 54 while Phil Carter made 37 and Greg Pickles (33). The best of the Woodlands bowlers were Richard Spittlehouse (3-47) and Chris Brice (3-57).

Third-placed Undercliffe made it three successive wins as they defeated Yeadon by 103 runs at Intake Road. Skipper Chris Greenwood claimed five for 10 and overseas player Nawaz Sardar (4-21) as Yeadon were skittled out for 73 in reply to Undercliffe's 176 all out - a total built around a second-successive half-century from former Yorkshire player Ashley Metcalfe and an unbeaten 34 from wicketkeeper Luke Holroyd.

The only crumb of comfort for Yeadon on a desperately disappointing afternoon were the efforts of Mahmood Rasool (4-55) and skipper Grant Soames (3-49).

Pudsey Congs picked up a maximum 20 points after defeating Bradford & Bingley by 80 runs and are now the only unbeaten team. They also have a game in hand on the three teams above them and are just 16 points behind leaders Pudsey St Lawrence.

Once again the Congs batsmen produced a powerful display. Babar Butt led the way with 88 - his highest score of the season - and was well supported by Adam Patel (44), Gareth Phillips (41) and Andy Siddall (36no) as a total of 286-6 was posted. Sri Lankan Naweed Ghany (3-85) was the most successful bowler.

Bradford & Bingley, a team with title ambitions, lost their first four wickets for 48 and with them went any chance of challenging the formidable Congs total. Matthew Duce hit a six and eight fours in a breezy 58, but Bradford & Bingley were dismissed for 208. Mark Bray (4-42) and skipper Glenn Roberts (4-43) were the men who did the damage.

Champions Baildon heaped more misery on bottom team Bankfoot as they returned to form with a resounding 112-run triumph. Simon Webb continued his good form with 79 as Baildon posted a score of 225-9. Adil Islam chipped in with 34. Andrew Duckworth took four for 46 and the persevering Greg Colehan took three for 50 for Bankfoot. The home side crumbled in reply and were bowled out for 113.

East Bierley's ploy of using two of their wicketkeepers to bolster a depleted attack paid off as they defeated Farsley by 76 runs. Derbyshire stumper Lee Goddard took three for six and Greg Wood (2-73) as Farsley were dismissed for 211 in reply to East Bierley's 287 all out. Left-arm spinner was again in the wickets with three for 57.

Former East Bierley opener Steve Simpson marked his return to the club he won a Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup winners medal with last season, by making 59, Lorenzo Inghram made 45 and Harry Anderson (43), but Farsley still fell well short of East Bierley's total.

Scotland skipper Gavin Hamilton set the tone for the innings with a knock of 93 which contained two sixes and 14 fours. Andrew Rennison (60) was the other main contributor while left-arm spinner Inghram took five for 43.

Division Two

Keighley opener Matthew Bottomley hit a magnificent 166 as his second-placed side crushed lowly Idle by 158 runs.

Bottomley struck 24 fours and shared a first-wicket stand worth 211 with Andrew Waggett who hit 89.

The openers set Keighley on course for a total of 302-2 and Idle were never in the hunt when they replied, being bowled out for 145 as Ross Towler took four for 35 and Steve Reape (3-10).

Keighley are five points behind Hanging Heaton who defeated Brighouse by seven wickets in a match which saw John Carruthers take a hat-trick.

Carruthers finished with five for 28 as Brighouse were dismissed for 126 despite a defiant 41 not out from skipper Paul Cummins.

Hanging Heaton cruised to their victory target with the brothers of two of Yorkshire's top cricketers, Nick Bresnan (41no) and Haroon Rashid (40no) leading the way.

Hartshead Moor have moved up to third after a convincing 106-run triumph over Windhill.

Craig Field (74), Danny Squires (60) and Australian Tom Manvell (43no) helped Hartshead Moor to a total of 250-7 before Windhill were dismissed for 144 in reply. Craig Woodhead took four for 40 and Manvell crowned a good all-round performance by picking up three for 21.

Manningham Mills were a side in a hurry. They dismissed Morley for just 82 with Tauseef Arshad doing much of the damage with six for 20. Mills ran out 10 wicket winners as Amjad Hussain (41no) and Mohammad Altaf (41no) saw their side to victory in just 14 overs.

Lightcliffe had a thrilling one-wicket win over bottom team Great Horton - sealing their success with just one ball to spare.

Sadaqat Hussain (52), Chris Taylor (41) and Matthew Taylor (40) steered Lightcliffe past the Great Horton score of 224 all out which was built around a fine innings of 95 from Khalil Rehman. Zaman (3-49) and Umar Salim (3-54) were the best of the bowlers.

Overseas player Mappa Bandara hit an unbeaten 69 as he and Rashid Ramzan (58no) steered Old Lane to a seven-wicket win over Spen Victoria.

Old Lane had little difficulty easing past the Spen score of 153 all out which was only bolstered in the closing stages by a brisk 43 from Dan Abbott. Mubtaba Akhtar took three for 44.
