Woodlands' hopes of winning the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy for the third time in four seasons ended in disappointment at East Bierley, today.
They went down by four wickets to Yorkshire League champions York in the delayed 2009 final and they could have few complaints.
From the moment Marcus Wood won the toss for York his team dominated the game.
Opening bowlers Peter Groves (3-29) and Tom Bartram (2-30) gained early movement from the pitch and Woodlands were soon in trouble.
Their cause wasn't helped by a singular lack of restraint from their top order batsmen who were guilty of giving away their wickets with a succession of careless shots. Nobody benefited more than left-arm spinner Daniel Woods with three for 21.
Only skipper Chris Brice - leading the side in the absence of Pieter Swanepoel, showed the required application. Brice finished unbeaten on 39 in a Woodlands innings that was shortened by six overs when rain halted play.
Woodlands knew that a total of 141 was well below par and it gave little room for manoeuvre for a bowling attack already deprived of the services of Swanepoel.
It was to Woodlands' credit that they made York fight for their runs particularly as their bowling attack was further depleted when Sam Frankland damaged a hamstring after bowling just one over.
It meant that teenage bowlers Scott Richardson and Adam Wood were pressed into action to supplement the stirring efforts of Sarfraz Ahmed (2-14), Brice (2-26) and Richard Spittlehouse (2-37).
Ultimately the destiny of the trophy was determined by an innings of quality from Simon Mason. He was far more assured in his strokeplay than anybody else in the match, hitting a six and seven fours as he made 52.
A second rain break with nine runs needed merely delayed the inevitable. When play resumed former Cleckheaton leg spinner Tom Pringle made the winning hit when he cut a short ball from Wood to the boundary to spark loud York celebrations.
