Handy Andy runs into top form with two centuries

Andy Gorrod
Andy Gorrod has run up some impressive figures for Gomersal

Gomersal's Andy Gorrod made a dream start to the season when, having celebrated his 17th birthday on Friday, he hit 103 in the opening day Division One defeat at home to Saltaire and followed that with 101 against Baildon to secure a Heavy Woollen Cup first round win on Sunday.

The former Whitcliffe Mount pupil moved on to New College, Huddersfield, to join their Cricket Academy and work for his A levels last autumn and the move has certainly paid off in cricket terms.

With Jack Hargreaves amongst the New College students already attracting Yorkshire's attentention Gorrod is definitely in the right place but he is not getting carried away with last weekend's success.

The modest teenager was initially reluctant to even have his photo taken, remarking, "Oh I'm not into all that". However, given time to reflect on his achievements we met up at Oxford Road in midweek and spoke about his hopes for the future.

"I know I decided to go to New College in order to play more cricket," he explained, "But my A levels are a priority at the moment. I would like a career that involved cricket and if I get through my A levels I would probably want to go to somewhere like Leeds Metropolitan University where I can continue with sport and maybe play a good level university cricket."

Andy admits he would relish an opportunity to be involved with Yorkshire, and was pleased to take part in an Academy practice match last week, but with Minor Counties, or even life as a League professional, to look forward to as possible options in the future he is happy just to be doing his best for Gomersal at the moment.

With prolific opener Richard Gould forced to pull out of the Gomersal side on the opening weekend, due to his wife giving birth last week, Gorrod's form was a godsend for the Oxford Roader's but the teenager can expect a stern test at Cleckheaton when he will doubtless find himself facing up to Steve Harmison's former Durham new ball partner, John Wood, at Moorend.
