Round Two

cup logoHolders Bradford & Bingley needed a fine all-round performance from Chris Thompson to save them from a potential upset against Second Division Saltaire at Roberts Park on a day when rain forced all of the eight ties to be reduced in length.

Thompson, who took 4-39 as Saltaire made 135 in their 30 overs, had to rescue his side from the depths of 48 for five with an unbeaten innings of 60 off 51 balls.

He was joined in a crucial sixth-wicket stand of 64 by David Clow (28) after Matt Simpson (2-20) and Hisan Ahmad (2-29)

Fahid Rehman made a fine 52 for Saltaire and Waleed Akhtar (35) for Saltaire who certainly gave Bradford & Bingley a good run for their money.

Bradford & Bingley will go into Wednesday night's draw, which will be made at Pudsey Congs at 8pm, along with champions Pudsey Congs, Woodlands, Pudsey St Lawrence, Cleckheaton, East Bierley, Manningham Mills and the only survining Division Two team, Idle.

In-form Woodlands recorded their seventh successive league and acup win as they saw off Undercliffe by eight wickets in a 32 overs a side contest. New recruit Simon Mason was unbeaten on 49 when Woodlands passed the home team's total of 161-8.

Openers Scott Richardson (42) and Sam Frankland (35) gave the innings a rapid launch before Mason completed the job of steering his side home.

Undercliffe were indebted to their overseas player Nawaz Sardar (62) and Yassir Abbas (49) for leading a recovery from 57-5 which enabled them to post a challenging total. Richard Spittlehouse took 4-33 for Woodlands, his best figures of the season.

There was no second giant-killing act for Great Horton. The first-round conquerors of Baildon went down by seven wickets at East Bierley.

But they put up a fight with skipper Khalid Mehmood hitting 58 as they were bowled out for 133 as spinner Luke Jarvis took 3-17 and paceman Muhammad Azhar Ullah (3-25).

East Bierley breezed to their victory target with openers Gharib Razak (56) and Gavin Hamilton (47no) guiding the 2009 winners to a comfortable win.

The Nicholson brothers Ian (41) and Mally (37) were the main contributors to Cleckheaton's total of 183-6 as they defeated Hartshead Moor by 69 runs to clinch their place in the last eight for the second-successive season.

Manningham Mills's overseas player Imran Khalid produced another important contribution for his side. He made 49 as they secured a five-wicket win at Windhill. The home side's total of 111-9 was insufficient to severely test Mills.

Babar Butt helped put the skids under his old club Bowling Old Lane as champions Pudsey Congs secured a 29-run win.

Butt continued his good form by making 48 as Congs posted a score of 147-7 before restricting Old Lane to 118-9 with left arm spinner Glenn Roberts taking 3-9.

The all Division Two clash between Idle and Keighley produced the day's closest finish. Idle squeezed home by four runs after making 203-6 in their 30 overs thanks to half-centuries from Carleon Brome (54) and Wajid Hussain (51).

Keighley fell agonisingly short of their victory target despite the efforst of opener Freddie Pearson (64) and Imran Patel (36).

The shortest game of a truncated day was at Tofts Road where Pudsey St Lawrence defeated Spen Victoria by eight wickets in a 20 overs a side contest. Matthew Lumb took 3-22 to restrict Spen to 91-8, then Steve Watts hit and unbeaten 36 to seal victory for St Lawrence.
