Priestley Cup First Round Match Preview

Posted April 27, 2006

Bankfoot v Baildon
Baildon last won the competition in 2001 while Bankfoot haven't won it in 102 attempts. Although Bankfoot have started well and had a shock win over Doncaster Town in the Solly Sports Heavy Woollen Cup they face a tough task against a Baildon side which will want to avoid losing to Division Two opposition for the second successive year.
Men in form: Nigel Hanson (Bankfoot), Ian Philliskirk (Baildon).
Men to watch: Neil Nicholson (Bankfoot), Colin DeGrandhomme (Baildon),
Bowling Old Lane v Farsley

Farsley won at Old Lane at the same stage of the competition last year and though they have had to rebuild their side they should still have the edge. Don't be surprised if Old Lane give them a few shocks along the way.
Men in form: Amjad Khan (Bowling Old Lane), Steve Simpson (Farsley).
Men to watch: Mohammed Hanif (Bowling Old Lane), Ashley Metcalfe (Farsley).

Brighouse v Gomersal

Brighouse have made a great start on their return to Division One thanks largely to the efforts of opener Gary Wainwright, overseas Rizwan Ahmed and skipper James Stansfield. Gomersal lost their opening league game and face a tough test. Adam Stott will want to impress against his old Brighouse colleagues.
Men in form: Gary Wainwright (Brighouse), Amer Siddique (Gomersal).
Men to watch: Rizwan Ahmed (Brighouse), Rob Burton (Gomersal).

East Bierley v Cleckheaton

When the draw was made this all Division One tie stood out as the game of the round. East Bierley are anxious to win the cup for the first time since completing their record-breaking hat-trick of wins in 2000. Ambitious Cleckheaton have had a difficult start to the season and the absence of former East Bierley wicketkeeper batsman Mark Gill is a big blow.
Men in form: Ryan Bradshaw (East Bierley), Tom Pringle (Cleckheaton).
Men to watch: Jaffer Nazir (East Bierley), John Wood (Cleckheaton).

Hartshead Moor v Pudsey St Lawrence

The cup has certainly been tough on Hartshead Moor in recent seasosn. Last year they were drawn at home to Pudsey Congs and this time they face an equally daunting test against Division One leaders Pudsey St Lawrence. Moor's promising young bowler Ian Wardlaw has a chance to shine against one of the league's top batting combinations.
Men in form: Michael Padgett (Hartshead Moor), Mark Robertshaw (Pudsey St Lawrence).
Men to watch: Ian Wardlaw (Hartshead Moor), Gary Fellows (Pudsey St Lawrence).

Lightcliffe v Bradford & Bingley

Bradford & Bingley have a good cup reputation but they will need to be careful at Lightcliffe. Carl Sharp's men should be too strong for Lightcliffe but the home side's batsmen are capable of making the sort of score which will trouble Bradford & Bingley.
Men in form: Jonathan Wilson (Lightcliffe), Nkateko Ethy Mbhalti (Bradford & Bingley)
Men to watch: Anthony Crilly (Lightcliffe), Richard McCarthy (Bradford & Bingley)

Manningham Mills v Undercliffe

This could be the closest battle of all. Both sides have recruited well and are among the favourites for promotion. Mills, who knocked out Division One sides Baildon and Cleckheaton last season, will have to be at their best if they are to see off an Undercliffe side hungry for success.
Men in form: Hassar Jamal (Manningham Mills), David Taylor (Undercliffe)
Men to watch: Mohammed Maroof (Manningham Mills), Craig Hunt (Undercliffe)

Pudsey Congs v Morley

Congs launch their bid for a record-equalling third successive cup triumph against Division One rivals Morley. Congs should have too much strength in depth for Morley, but the visitors are renowned for battling hard and their overseas player Shehzad Butt will be anxious to impress against the team he helped to cup glory last season.
Men in form: Muhammed Azhar Ullah (Pudsey Congs), David Nebard (Morley)
Men to watch: Babar Butt (Pudsey Congs), Shehzad Butt (Morley)

Spen Victoria v Yeadon

Spen Victoria's bowers have been in good form but its their batsmen who are likely to hold the key to this match. Spen cannot afford another batting failure if they are to progress and Yeadon, a side with a good cup pedigree in recent times, will present a real test.
Men in form: James Russell (Spen Victoria), Steve Lawrence (Yeadon)
Men to watch: Chris Elstub (Spen Victoria, James Todd (Yeadon)

Woodlands v Esholt

Esholt skipper Richard Whitehurst won £13,000 on the TV quiz show Deal or No Deal this week, but he would really hit the jackpot if his side sent champions Woodlands spinning out of the cup. His chances are slim because Woodlands hold so many aces and are desperate to finally lift the cup after losing the last three finals.
Men in form: Richard Pyrah (Woodlands), Nadeem Hanif (Esholt)
Men to watch: Safraz Ahmed (Woodlands), Richard Whitehurst (Esholt).
