Pudsey St Lawrence v Brighouse |
Both teams have made good starts to the league campaign and this has the potential to be a compelling contest. It is now nine years since the Saints scored the last of their cup wins which is a surprisingly long wait for a side of their pedigree. In contrasts, newly-promoted Brighouse have never lifted the trophy, but like St Lawrence they do have a number of potential match-winners. New overseas player Rizwan Ahmed is Division One's leading runscorer and it will be interesting to see how St Lawrence's improving Australian bowler James Pearson performs after some encouraging recent displays. The key will be how well the Brighouse bowlers can contain the powerful Saints batsmen.
Men to watch: James Pearson (Pudsey St Lawrence), Rizwan Ahmed (Brighouse) |
Hanging Heaton v Keighley |
Both sides are struggling near the foot of the table and after receiving byes in the first round will be keen to progress. Hanging Heaton have shown good form in the Heavy Woollen Cup where they have defeated Woodlands and Barkisland and will be keen to make home advantage count. Former Yorkshire wicketkeeper Ismail Dawood made a century against Barkisland last week and is a man Keighley must contain. Keighley have been completely out of sorts so far. If they are to progress they need Richard Robinson and Ross Towler to fire.
Men to watch: Ismail Dawood (Hanging Heaton), Richard Robinson (Keighley)

Woodlands v Saltaire |
Champions Woodlands are bidding to reach their fourth successive final but they will be aware that Saltaire were one of the only sides to defeat them in the league last season and they would dearly love to spring an upset again. Saltaire have the ability to trouble the best sides and their batting is capable of providing them with a challenging score with Gharib Razak, Safaraz Mahomed and Khurram Maqsood the men in form. The test for Saltaire is making runs against the strong Woodlands attack in which Richard Pyrah has been outstanding this season and preventing Woodlands' batsmen from cutting loose. Mansa Khan has been Saltaire's form bowler but he will need considerable support if his side are to upset Woodlands again.
Men to watch: Richard Pyrah (Woodlands), Mansa Khan (Saltaire)

Spen Victoria v Lightcliffe |
Lightcliffe pulled off one of the surprises of the first round when they defeated Bradford & Bingley and gain revenge for the first round defeat they suffered at Spen lane last season. Rain ruined last week's league encounter between the sides but in the play that was possible the Spen batsmen had problems. Spen's new overseas player Priyankara Silva is expected to make his cup debut and will strengthen their bowling attack, but it is their brittle middle order that Lightcliffe will be looking to expose.
Men to watch: Chris Elstub (Spen Victoria), Anthony Crilly (Lightcliffe)

Bowling Old Lane v Idle |
Old Lane stunned Farsley in the first round and will be hoping to claim another Division One scalp. Malik Aftab, Mohammed Hanif and Raqib Younis all made half-centuries in that match, but may find runs harder to come by against an Idle attack in which overseas Dinusha Fernando is well supported by wily campaigners Greg Colehan and Andy Marshall. Home advantage may help Old Lane, but Idle will prove a tough nut to crack.
Men to watch: Mohammed Hanif (Bowling Old Lane), Dinusha Fernando (Idle)

Windhill v Manningham Mills |
If the formbook is anything to go by then Manningham Mills can look forward to a quarter-final place for the second successive season. Windhill are rock bottom of Division Two while Manningham Mills are unbeaten at the top. Mills have looked a formidable outfit and should have far too much fire power for their rivals. Amar Rashid will be looking to celebrate his call up for the Bradford League representative side.
Men to watch: Avenish Aware (Windhill), Amar Rashid (Manningham Mills)
|
Baildon v Pudsey Congs |
This is undoubtedly the tie of the round. Baildon scuppered Pudsey Congs bid for a record sixth successive league title at Jenny Lane last season and now they will be trying to derail Congs' bid for a record-equaling third successive cup triumph. Baildon are an infuriatingly inconsistent side, brilliant one week and bad the next. If this is one of their brilliant days then Congs will have their hands full. League form would suggest that Congs have a clear edge, but Baildon have enjoyed more success against Congs than any other side,
Men to watch: Babar Butt (Pudsey Congs), Phil Slater (Baildon)
|
East Bierley v Great Horton |
The cup has often been a happy hunting ground for East Bierley and its the competition which could offer them their best chance of silverware this season. Bierley are well equipped with a powerful batting unit headed by Richard Gould and John Proud, plus a good bowling attack which hasn't quite lived up to expectations to date. Great Horton have had their best start to a season for a number of years and showed when beating Methley in the Heavy Woollen Cup that they are no respecters of reputations. However, East Bierley should have far too much power for them
Men to watch: Jaffer Nazir (East Bierley), Rizwan Akbar (Great Horton)
