it was a case of third time lucky for Saltaire as they produced a battling performance to defeat Undercliffe by six wickets in the Under-17 championship play-off.

After defeat in the final in each of the previous two seasons, victory was sweet and Saltaire had the added satisfaction of avenging their recent cup final defeat by Undercliffe.

Their success was based on an excellent performance in the field where their bowlers, backed by some fine fielding, kept runs at a premium.

Undercliffe could only make 32 in the first 11 overs, but they did have all their wickets intact and a platform from which to accelerate.

Awaia Ijaz broke the opening partnership by dismissing Sofian Khan, and then Danny Ward put Saltaire in control by taking four quick wickets including the key one of Undercliffe skipper Andy Duckworth (26).

Undercliffe plunged to 60 for six and as the pressure intensifed they lost further wickets to be all out for 91 with seven of their 40 overs remaining. Ward had the excellent figures of four for six.

Saltaire made light work of knocking off the runs. They cruised to 82 for one with Tom Slater making 45 before a couple of careless shots saw three wickets fall before victory was sealed.

Ward followed up hios fine bowling by making 29 on a day when Saltaire earned full reward for a disciplined team effort.
